Nashville Wraps ribbon

I love the ribbon from Nashville Wraps that I used on this mini book! Some of it feels so soft and some of it has a raffia type feel to it. When I saw the animal striped ribbon, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. I made a mini book from Prima packaging, added pictures from a trip to the Cleveland Zoo and then tied ribbons on the ring holding the pages together. The bright blue ribbon is so pretty and adds just the needed punch of color.

I was given a lovely selection of ribbons, which are all made from sustainable and recycled materials. I was really impressed with the quality of them and the richness of the colours. With so much of it at my disposal I decided to have a play and see if I could come up with any new ways to use it.

Here are a couple of layouts I made featuring the ribbons and an explanation of the ways in which I used them.

Dress it up!

To give the ribbon a whole new look and tie it in with the colour scheme of the layout, I put a rub-on on the white ribbon seen here:

Rub-ons are easy to apply and the possibilities are endless, you could also try using words as well as patterns.

Add some bling! Here I've used some studs for a more masculine feel, but you could also use gems, eyelets and brads.

Use it as an embellishment

On the 'Love' layout, I've used the raffia to make a heart embellishment.

And here I've wound it in a circle and stuck a pin through it. So simple! I adhered it to my page using fabric glue.

Layer it!.

On the 'A Team' layout I've layered the kraft coloured recycled fibre ribbon on top of the green eco grossgrain, I like the combination of different textures and I think it adds more interest.

I also plaited the raffia ribbon combining all three colours, creating an unusual effect.

The mesh at the bottom of the layout and both of the grosgrain are from them!! The grosgrain looks and feels just like regular grosgrain but is made from 100% post consumer recycled bottles- how cool is that!!

This layout features Eco- friendly ribbon from Nashville Wraps, a fantastic company who has sponsored Create it-GREEN! Check out the brown eco-grosgrain ribbon in the lower left corner - it was wonderful to work with, cut, and adhere. Apparently it was made from recycled water bottles!

Isn't that amazing?

This LO is "GREEN" in several ways.

1- Using up "stash"-- I used up a whole piece of patterned paper from 2002; Sandylion Design's "Tree Bark." Go on: dig through your paper stash- you WON'T regret it!

2- Creatively making use of scraps-- The floral medallion tucked uner the photos was a scrap. You'd never know I only had half a medallion, now, would you?!! *Grin*

3- Giving GREEN companies the business -- The medallion is from "Paper Trunk" paper, a GREEN manufacturer I love to use!

4- Trying new upcycled products!-- The brown eco-grosgrain ribbon used in lower left is made from recycled materials- in this case, WATER BOTTLES! GO Nashville Wraps!

5- Reducing waste-- I employed my CM Square punch to remove a very small portion of a photo that otherwise may have been discarded, then used it superimposed on my layout as a "focus" spot. The oxen are featured in that tiny photo.

6- Adapting older paper-- I was able to make use of the John Deere vintage tractor motif from an older-style themed patterned paper from Creative Imaginations. I would never use the whole sheet but WILL use these motifs. To adapt the motif to my LO, I used my CM corner shaper and ink to add some interest and create a more vintage-y look.

I had fun being green and trying out the Nashville Wraps eco-grosgrain ribbon.

Hi, sorry it's a bit late but I wanted to do a layout for this reveal!

The challenge for the sketch teams this month was to

use recycled materials for the squares on the sketches. You could use something such as cardboard, gift wrap, tissue paper...

I was looking through a magazine one day and there was a FULL SHEET of VELLUM in there! There was some advertising on it, but I didn't care! I used the vellum for the squares in the background. I used an old business card to make the date tag.

Re-using paper bags

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are enjoying our blog hop! If you haven't already, scroll down to find out all the details of the hop & how you can win some fantastic prizes from our sponsors and get some freebies!

Today I wanted to share a few ideas on how to re-use your paper bags. Lot's of stores use paper instead of plastic now which is great!

First I made a little treat bag. I sprayed the bag with mist to add some colour and then added a simple journalling spot with an embellishment on. This is a great idea for a kids party, you could easily add the child's names to the tag or have colour coordinating bags for boys & girls. And it's so quick & simple! It would be great for Halloween too.

The monthly kit club I subscribe to comes in large paper bags. These are ideal for wrapping gifts, you could create your own patterned paper by stamping on to the bag directly.

Here I've re-used the bags to send items in the post. I've used decorative masking tape to mark off an area for the address (I've erased this out for confidentiality purposes) and to seal the package. Just make sure you add some bubble wrap and/or sturdy cardboard to the package if you are sending something that will bend or get easily damaged.

On this last bag I created some simple flowers using some journalling spots, pleating some decorative masking tape & adding buttons, which turns it into a gift bag. If you have a paper bag with a store logo on which covers most of the bag, then you can easily cover it using some patterned paper and adding some embellishments.

Faye Here! Hi all! I have what I think is an awesome tutorial for you all today. I am going to show you how to make really fun paper blossoms.

STEP 1: Find paper with fun images or patterns like from a magazine... my favorite are fashion magazines like such. This is from Aprils Glamour Magazine. I liked the pattern of the bottom bag.

STEP 2: Collect materials... tear out the images you like from your magazines, old books, really anything you want. Pick two or more that go together and grab some tulle that coordinates... oh and don't forget the brad.

STEP 3: Cut circles... these do not have to be perfect circles (personally I just wing it). With the magazine paper I cut with shape scissors to give the flower edge. Depending on how many paper images you are using for each flower the circles need to be different sizes. Once they are cut you should fold them and roll their edges between your fingers. This will help give the flowers dimension.

STEP 4: The tulle I cut multiple circles, usually 5-10 and the sizes can vary. Don't throw away the remnants of the tulle... we are going to use that too!

I have laid out almost every thing you need right here. STEP 5: Layer and layer... starting with the largest circle begin layering the materials. I usually put a tulle layer between each layer of paper again for dimension. When using the tulle, I like to off set the center slightly of each piece of tulle to mimic petals.

STEP 6: Putting it together... take the left over tulle scraps and roll them between the palms of your hands until you have a little poof ball. Take your brad (I make glitter brads by taking office supply gold brads dipping them in glue and then glitter) and push it through the center of your poof ball. The nice thing about tulle is that it already had holes and is easy to maneuver through.

Now you are going to push the brad through the center of the layered flower you created. Some of you may prefer punching a hole in the paper before this step and that is fine but if you are like me, you can just push the brad through the paper as you go. Secure the brad on the back and you have a flower!

STEP 7: Add flare... first think I do is bend up the paper around the brad to give shape and then I turn each layer of paper slightly to off set the paper bends. Again this adds that dimension. Adding the feathers or maybe even leaves would just be an extra kick to this fabulous flower

Now hopefully I did not make it sound harder than it really is. It is a great use of paper that you would otherwise get rid of. I actually made a paper flower out of a magazine article that featured a friend of mine. I didn't want to throw the article away but I had no other use for it. I was able to cut the paper just right that the center flower had her name featured and then I used that flower on a scrapbook page about her.

I used the inside of some envelopes for my page, you know the ones you get your bank statement and junk main in? Well some of them have really nice patterns on the inside! I cut some circles in my cardstock and then glued parts of the envelopes to the back of my page to show through the holes.

I used an old piece of cardboard, some string, 2 old tickets and a small pc. of a library date slip.

The brown and white felt is recycled from a felt purse my friend made me a couple years back. She is not a "crafty" person by nature so I hated to part with it but I rarely used it. While I was putting it in the get rid of pile, I realized I could reuse the felt myself. Add some buttons and thread and presto, I give you felt flowers.

How many of you have missing pieces to a puzzle? In my case, we got puzzles in a kids meal, so I swiped the pieces (since they probably would have ended up in the garbage!) and painted them for my layout. Looking around the house for unwanted or unused items for your scrapbooks is a great way to go green, and add fun details to your pages! One fun thing to note - Before the paint was dry I shot it with my heat gun. The heat caused the white to do a cool crackle look, and the black to bubble, which was a really cool look too!

Crafty Spring Cleaning

Hi everyone! My younger sister Laci uploaded a video today that is perfect to share on CIG! I was so inspired by it that I thought I'd share it here for all of our GREEN followers. Laci shows how to make a "dryer sheet" and a swiffer cloth out of yarn scraps. Here's what Laci had to say, followed by her video!

This week I show how the dreaded Spring cleaning can be fun and crafty!

First, my fantastic cleaning gloves were inspired by the leading cleaning experts from BBC's "How Clean Is Your House?", Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie!

I am constantly trying to think of ways to save money and of course reduce waste. Here I take scrap yarn to make two easy projects that will reduce cost and waste!

1. Crochet your favorite stitch into any size "sheet" and spray with water and liquid fabric softener (4:1). I used cotton yarn and it works like a charm!

What fun and green ideas, right?! I am definitely feeling the urge to Spring Clean now! Love having a crafty family! ;)

Egg dye cups and Tags

Egg dye cups make great little gifts when planted with small herbs. We used water with our dye tablets (some say to use vinegar or lemon juice) and then rinsed the containers out well. The herbs will stay in these until they get bigger and are ready to plant in the herb garden.
I used some letter stickers I had to mark the cups with the names of the herbs.
My sister and I dyed tags with the egg dye. We had lots of small white and manila tags just lying around. This was a technique I learned from Michelle Ward's blog. It was fun and we ended up with some beautiful, spring-colored tags!!

This is a Prima Flower bag that I could NOT possibly throw away. So, yesterday I created a little tag using a digital from INKTEGRITY and tied it to the bag. Cute huh!!

MARCH Sketch and Challenge Reveals

Here is the layout sketch that the Layout team used.

ALEXA GILL -I created my background paper using old book pages & the 'map' card was
saved from a pack of kids playing cards.

JOAN LIDDLE - My recycled items are: wallpaper and flowers & leaves pulled off an old hat.

FAYE PERATA -I am working on a baby album for my best friend. She is a new mom and these are pictures from the first day of feeding at home!! I decided instead of flowers for the side accent, I would make a baby bottle. I have all these little ziplock bags from buying beads and buttons and never know what to do with them. I put some old craft glue and some white glitter in and sealed the bag. Then add the baby top and paper to look like the seal. Another touch was the lace used on the blue circle. This came from an old baby dress that had a hole in it. My friend was going to get rid of it but I thought I could use the trim!!

KANDI PHILLIPS -My green item is handmade paper. I recently had some cardstock get wet and I thought it was ruined. Instead of tossing it, I blended it up to make handmade paper! The die cut flowers and circle are from one screen and I have plenty left to use for another project. You can also use newspaper or junk mail, along with some Acid Free powder, to make paper and recycle those tossable items as well!

TANYA SMITH -I used three recycled items in it! I used a girl scout cookie box and hand cut the word “Climb” for the title. I also used an empty toilet paper roll for the stems of the flowers and I cut a Trader Joes Gift Card folder for the peach color paper underneath the group picture.

and MINE- I used a sheet of paper from a scrapbook for the background.

VICTORIA WARREN-MEARS -The recycled item is the paper with the number 50 on it. It is a page from a 1933 journal that I found at an antique shop.

and MINE -I used the cardboard that comes with the Basic Grey embellishments. I used it as the background for the card.

Hello there! I needed to make a card for a sketch & recipe challenge, so my fondness for keeping bits of goodness here and there came to my rescue! The challenge came from Crafts 4 Eternity - follow the sketch provided, use inking techniques and fabric on your card project.

Well the sketch required lots of strips behind the main image. I happened to have a few bits of fabric that I had saved from some handmade soap given to me by a friend. I don't sew, so fabric is not something I just usually have around the house. The burlap is some from a previous purchase a while back. Twine comes from my HUGE bags of dog food. The knot is made from a twine piece I saved from who knows where - I just loved the braided design! :D The cork pieces are leftover from a wine cork I sliced into buttons way back when for the blog hop.

I burned the edges of the Basic Grey Boxer paper to create a neat effect. did the same with the ends of the little braided knot. The chipboard oval is inked over with navy, and the circles with a silver sharpie to highlight.

You just never know how those little scraps might be put to use! Have a great and glorious day!

Use Recycled Items: Texturize!

Textured items can be found all over our homes and in nature. We can use recycled items to create texture, too! Many items can be used to create beautiful and unusual backgrounds and embellies for our scrapbooking and cardmaking creations. Let’s “scratch the surface” on the topic of TEXTURE!!

Packing cardboard from a set of dishes-

And here’s the result when it’s inked and applied to a LO!

(LO was created in 2008 with DT Kit from Scrapbooker's Club House.)

This green corrugated cardboard was also originally a packing material:

The “eyelash yarn” adds texture as well.

Here’s the result of using cheesecloth and paint on Bazzill CS to create a page background:

A peach pit, carefully washed and dried, was used to apply paint to a LO created this border. I “rolled” it along the cardstock with my fingers after covering it with LOTS of paint!!

Fabric & embellies cut from clothing can be used to create gorgeous texture and visual interest! Look at this altered notebook!

And, speaking of using clothing as embellies, here’s a photo of my daughter, Kate, embellished with a cut-out design from a t-shirt, with a heart shaped filigree button added!

Here is what happens when you crumple up a wad of waxed paper and dip it in red acrylic paint! This makes a really pretty card background!!

Buttons make great embellies. Try them in lines or on curves. Here’s a book dedication I made using an old cork dipped in red paint, and some red and black buttons set out all in a row on crisp white cardstock!

Button Clusters make great embellies and add a TONNE of texture! A button cluster applied to a sturdy file folder (which sits out on my desk) adds such beautiful texture that I just want to reach out and tough the surface of the folder every time I go by! LOL

Sanding adds beautiful texture, too! I generally use 150 grit sandpaper on my cardstock as seen on this sanded card.

Here is what results when the edge of a plastic lid from a jar is inked and applied to cardstock:

Additionally, some denim blue trim (All My Memories) was scrunched onto the tag as an embellie. this looks like it was tough to do but wasn’t, and added some easy texture to this masculine mini-card. I used MM Ribbon Glue to affix it.

In this LO of Noah with his floppy bunny, the brown paint texture effect was created with crumpled tissue dipped in paint, then a paper towel tube dipped in the paint.

(January 2009 “Prudence” kit from SBCH was used for this LO.)

Here are some other ideas you can use to add a textured look to your projects. Why not try some or all of these with ink or acrylic paint?
Use an actual mini-paint roller, a plastic mesh onion bag, a “painting” toothbrush, a “smooshed” paintbrush, tip of a pencil eraser, the circular lids or tops of jars, one’s fingertips, leaves, fork tines, pinecones, small pieces of pine-bough, Popsicle sticks, or straws used to ’blow” paint across the cardstock or patterned paper.
These make fabulously different "textured looks." Have fun experimenting!

Treat Cups

Here is the project that I was going to post during the blog hop but couldn't do it because of family circumstances.

I started with cleaned fruit cups and filled them with treats.

I'll show you three different ways to turn these cups into treat cups.

With one of the cups I covered the top with mesh and clear gift wrap.

Then I wrapped it down around and tied a piece of ribbon around it.

The next treat cup I put in a zippy bag and closed it up.

I tied a piece of ribbon around the bag and trimmed off the top of the bag. To make it easy to pull together I poked a little hole in it to let the air out as I pulled the ribbon together.

The third I laid on a piece of tissue paper.

I pulled it up around the treat cup and tied a piece of ribbon around it.

So there you have it. Not too hard or fancy but adds a nice touch to a treat. I did these for Valentine's Day but ,of course, they can be used for any occasion, even as birthday treats. So, start saving those little fruit cups! They'll come in handy sometime!!!

Tissue Paper Tutorial

Do you ever find that after Christmas or a birthday you end up with loads of tissue paper? Thought so! Tissue paper can be fun to use on papercrafting projects, i like to layer it on background paper to add texture. i've even added it onto canvas for paintings. Today i wanted to show you how to make a flower embellishment from tissue paper. This is just to get you started off though, there are tons of possibilities!

First off you'll need several layers of tissue paper. Then you need to cut your flower. i used my sissix machine, but you could easily handcut some. Most die cut machines will cut through several layers.

Then you need to seperate each layer. You'll need to glue each layer together, but it's very fragile so be careful! i'd advise you use a dry glue. If you're finding this a bit too fiddly, you can always just put a brad through the middle to hold them all together.

Then all you need to do is glue a button or gem in the centre.

A Spectacular Second Day of Reveals

We had so many wonderful projects this month, that I saved two for our day two reveal! I wanted to show you some before and after photos and provide more complete instruction lists!

Ali provided this fun project to give as a gift.

Supplies and method:

1 soup can, size 284 ml (10 oz)
Spray adhesive like Elmer's Craft Bond (Newspaper to protect work area from any overspray)
Craft Foam measured and cut to size in a rectangle and adhered around can
Buttons in colours that coordinate- from secondhand store bin, to adhere around can on top of foam layer
Small Gluedots to adhere buttons to the can (OR: can use spray adhesive as I did); & to adhere small buttons as flower centres
Large Gluedots to adhere flowers (Prima Essentials 5: Space Boy Item # 527860) to top edges of can
To fill in the empty areas between buttons: Tim Holtz Distress Stickles (Walnut Stain) and Black Diamond Stickles
Craft Foam circle glued under can as a soft, desk-safe base (adhere with spray adhesive)
Black velvet ribbon adhered inside "lip" (top edge) of can to "pretty-it-up/finish it off..." - use large & small glue dots in combination to secure.

Allow ALL to dry thoroughly.

And then, just when I thought all of the fun ideas were taken, Jean knocked my socks off with this repurposed vase! Can you believe this started out as a purple clear vase! It is gorgeous and reminds me that cherry blossom time is just around the corner! Jean promised us instructions on her blog, so check it out!

Jean says, "I altered my vase using tissue paper from a gift package I received last Valentines day.
Using dimension paint for the hearts and applying the tissue paper over the top with Mod Podge.
Finishing off with a light spray of Glimmer Mist, Black Distress Stickles and another layer of Mod Podge.
The beads are from a string of Mar De Gras beads.
Cherry Blossoms are created from Scraps of Scrapbook Paper and tissue paper centers.
The Branches I created using Floral wire, tape and strips of newspaper.
Painted over with brown paint and sponged on black.
Also sealed over with Mod Podge.

February Reveal at Create It-Green!

Hope you all had a wonderful Valentines Day! This month we have two new sketches and some wonderful creative ideas from our design team!
Our sketches come from design team member Victoria Warren-Mears.

First our card sketch:

Look at the cute repurposed pattern on this LO by design team member Alexa Gill.

Joan used flocked flowers and leaves cut from a Kleenex box for my flourish, a green paper bag for my photo mat and the circle tag is from a Bath and Body Works gift set. Isn't this gorgeous!

In this LO, Faye Perata used some great paint chips from her local hardware store that is closing for a neat accent.

Kandi used something right out of her garage! "If anyone has ever bought mesh tape for repairing walls, you know what an enourmous roll that is! I know there is no way my husband will EVER go through that whole thing (in our lifetime at least!) so I decided to repurpose it, and turn it into a crafty item! I layered the mesh tape onto cardstock and brayered over it, creating a fun and interesting pattern. It really helped my foam Thickers stand out, and I have plenty left over to use for a double layout!"

Tanya Smith used a stamped strip to help pop up her embellishments. I love the title on this one. These are some of the best times.

Out Altered Team Rocked the Challenge to do something with old jars, vases or cans!

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE MIX (Layer in quart jar)
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 C. all-purpose flour
1 C. chocolate chips
1/2 C. brown sugar
1/4 C. sugar
1 C. flour

Cookies In A Jar (Print recipe and attach to jar)
Chocolate Chip Cookies
(Makes 3-4 dozen)
1 jar Chocolate Chip Cookie mix
3/4 C. butter or margarine, softened
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Preheat oven to 375 F. In a large bowl, cream the butter, eggs and vanilla. Add the Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix and stir until the mixture is well blended. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes.

Oatmeal, Raisin & Spice Cookie Mix (Layer in quart jar)
1/2 C raisins
1/2 C. sugar
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 C. brown sugar
2 C. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 C. old-fashioned oats
Layer the ingredients in the order given in a wide mouth 1-quart canning jar. Pack each layer in place before adding the next ingredient.
Attah a gift tag with the mixing and baking directions.

COOKIES IN A JAR RECIPE (Print recipe and attach to jar)
1 jar Oatmeal, Raisin & Spice Cookie mix
1/2 C. butter or margarine, softened
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
Preheat the oven to 375 F. In a large bowl, cream the butter, eggs and vanilla. Add the oatmeal mixture and stir until well blended. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes.

Double Fudge Brownie Mix (Layer in quart jar)
1 1/2 C. sugar
3/4 C. cocoa powder
3/4 C. all-purpose flour)
3/4 C. chocolate chips
1/2 C. chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
Layer the ingredients in the order given into a wide-mouth quart canning jar. Pack each layer in place before adding the next ingredient.
Attach a gift tag with mixing and baking directions.

Double Fudge Brownies ( Print recipe and attach to jar)

1 jar Double Fudge Brownie Mix
3/4 C. butter or margarine, softened
3 eggs, slightly beaten

Preheat the oven to 325 F. In a large bowl, cream the butter and eggs. Add the Double Fudge Brownie Mix and stir until well blended. Spread batter into a slightly greased or sprayed 9 X 12" pan. Bake for 30-40 minutes. Cool in pan.

Potato Soup (Layer in a quart jar)
2 C. Instant mashed potatoes
1/12 C. instant powdered milk
2 T. instant chicken bouillion
2 tsp. dried minced onion
1 tsp. dried parsley
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 1/2 tsp. seasoning salt

Potato Soup (Print recipe and attach to jar)
1 jar Potato Soup Mix
Place the Potato Soup Mix in a large soup pot. Add 8 cups boling water. Mix well and let stand 5 minutes to thicken. Serve immediately.

Goody Bag Flowers

If you have kids then you probably have empty goody bags headed for your trash. Before you throw them out, give them new life as a decoration. Simply take the bag and cut off the bottom, fold it in half and secure the folded part with tape (or chenille or what ever is on hand) add a stem, put into a vase and enjoy!! My daughter and I made these in less than three minutes!! Here is one flower:

Cropped-off "Photo Scraps" as embellishments!

Have you ever cropped a photo and thought "JEEPERS! That's pretty--- that piece I had to crop off!" ???

I HAVE!

A couple of years ago I began saving cropped off scraps of photos that I just KNEW could be used as embellishments on cards or to add interest to layouts. Some of them were real gems: things like flowers, parts of textured items like tree bark, brick, woodgrain flooring, sand, grass or even the leaves on a bush.

Here is an example: on the card below, the brick with the bleeding-heart bush in front of it made a beautiful embellie on a card I made for a friend who was going thru a rough time.

What cropped-off scraps of photos can YOU save? What can you create with them?

And...What sort of a container can you stash these handy cropped-off photo gems in? I use a recycled Swiffer Wet Jet floor cloths box to store mine! Wash out well, and label. They are rectangular, flat and the best part is,
can be stacked!

Coffee Lid Necklace Tutorial

Hi everyone- it's Tanya here!!

To make this necklace I used a clean coffee lid, my Sizzix, some old fabric, my Crop-a-dile, an eyelet, Mod Podge, Staz-On ink, my Sharpie, Diamond Glaze and a thin ribbon.

When Cyndi challenged us to make a project with a coffee cup lid, my mind went blank. What could I possibly make that would make a lid look different! Then I realized that my Sizzix could help- I cut around nearly all of the raised edges of the lid so it could fit into the machine. Then using my Small Flower die I cut a flower out of the lid.

Then I lightly sandpapered both sides and wiped the grit from the flower.

Using some old fabric, I used the same die to cut a fabric flower.

This fabric is from a dress I loved & wore nearly 15 years ago.

Using Mod Podge, I attached the fabric to the flower and waited for it to dry. Then I trimmed the extra strands of fabric, applied ink to the edges and the back (only to have most of the ink come off on my fingers) I let what was left of the ink dry a little longer.

Then using my Crop-a dile, I added an eyelet.

Then I doodled on the back of the necklace with my Sharpie. When the ink was dry, I applied Diamond Glaze to the front, waited for it to dry then applied it to the back and waited for it to dry.

Once dry to the touch, I let it dry overnight before I laced the ribbon through the eyelet . Here's the front:

And here's my girl -first thing in the morning- in her new necklace:

We may be making a few more of these as Valentines for Penelope's best friends.

CHALLENGE:

Create a project--- a card, layout or any other utility item that illustrates the phrase---

"I'm BUBBLING Over With Affection..."

Use recycled items to make the project Green. More words may be added to complete the verse or leave the verse as is!It will be fun to see how many themes go with this wording! Put your pic into the photo album titled Bubbling Over, by Tuesday, January 19th, 2010. The album is on the Photo Page of the CreateItGreen Yahoo Group.
Here is my Bubbling ATC. I used recycled cardboard for the card and I used newspaper for the pillow and window.

The altered team was asked to create something using a recycled item and real stitching on it.

JEAN MARIE PENNINGTON
Jean said, "The recycled Items I used are large fridge advertisement magnets from my phone book and last years calendar magnet from the doctors office. I created felt magnets for valentines day."

ALI MacDONALD
Ali said, "I altered old jeans and made embellishments for Los or cards. Here is the info.
Pic 1 is a set of 6 different types of "SCRUFFY POSIES" (as I have decided to call them, ) LOL!
1. Slightly Gathered, Zigzag Posey
2. Flat "Sun Rays" Flower
3. Heavy Denim, Frayed Flower
4. Flat Zigzag Posey
5. Flat & Funky Floss Flower

6. Extra-Scruffy, (slightly gathered) Ink-Grunged Posey

All six Posies are stitched at LEAST in the centres. Several are machine stitched and one is stitched by hand.

I simply cut circles freehand from old jeans and then zigzagged them right-side up and wrong-side up, in no particular order, to a piece of paper ribbon. Pressed lightly. Ready to use!"

And she created a layout using those scruffy flowers and denim edging.

JAN HENNINGS
Jan made an altered frame. She said," I reused a frame and some scraps of cardstock and lace to make my altered frame. I used my sewing machine to stitch around the Stampin' Up! rub-on and then glued it to the patterned paper. Add a button and you have a super simple, inexpensive gift or home decor item."

Now, on to the layout sketch.

The layout team was asked to create a layout using the sketch as inspiration, and to use a recycled item on their layout.

Alexa said, "The green items I used were corregated cardboard from a wine box and I also punched a cork place mat to make some buttons."

JOAN LIDDLE
Joan said said she used "Prima packaging for the photo mat and the journaling card, old buttons and the heart is punched from a coffee sleeve."

FAYE PERATA
Faye said, "On this page, the recycled item is the flower on the page. These are blossoms that I like to make. I use images from magazines and old book pages and repurpose them into a flower blossom. I love using magazines to make these blossoms because of their glossy look. I also add tulle into the layered look. The center brad is a traditional gold brad you find in an office supply store that I have covered with glue and glitter. I also used notebook paper for my journal spot... i rescued this notebook from my friends garbage can. She was throwing it away cause it got wet so I just cut that part off. I don't know if that counts though :)"

KANDI PHILLIPS
Kandi said, "The recycled item used on my layout is the brown paper packaging. I got a lot of it during December when lots of online purchases showed up at my house! ;)"

Tanya said, " I reused packaging (black paper from Heidi Swapp & a grungeboard tag from ranger)."

I also did one. I used a sheet of a notebook.

It's amazing how you can use recycled materials in a layout! Wasn't that fun seeing all the creations!!!

Jeanna said , "as for the recycled material that I used in my card, I used an old box and get the corrugated part of it.. I distressed it with a blank ink to put some weathery effect on it."

Jennifer said, "for the newspaper one - obviously the newspaper is recycled (circles crinkled and then distressed with ink), but also the card base is some of my coffee paper: coffee ground sprinkled on cs, allowed to dry, and then sept into the garden or compost. twine for buttons is more of my dog food bag twine! :) papers are Basic Grey Indian Summer and digi is from Squigglefly if you need that info.

for the little girl one - the pink paper is actually manilla type paper that a candle or something was wrapped in from the store for protection. (like they would tissue paper before putting it in the shopping bag). I sprayed it with 2 coats of rose tea glimmer mist prior to using punches. I want you to know that I did actually sew on this card - a major thing for me because I DO NOT sew!! only for you, babe! :) paper is Basic Grey Euphoria and image is again from Squigglefly. "

Egg Carton Sweet Treats

About.com: Family Crafts was having a challenge to use and egg carton, in whole or in part and submit your idea. I recycled an egg carton, painted it with acrylic paint and once dry, stamped on it. It's a lot of fun and makes a cute gift of some sweet treats. I made 18 mini cupcakes and set them in the carton. Added an image and ribbon and it's ready to give to a friend.

I made this little gift box by nabbing one of those FREE McD gift card holders that look like their fries boxes. I carefully took it apart and used it as a template. Voila, a gift box!

This idea is not really "recycling" as such but re-using, maybe! Aren't notebooks just so plain and blahhhh? Well, I took one apart carefully (just by bending the wire a little, it simply comes out easy by twisting it out). I glued some pretty patterned paper onto the front and fancied it up. And, now the notebook is wayyyyyyy more fun!!! Ready to give away, or keep for yourself! haha!

Oh, our FIRST DT reveal will take place on January 15th!!! So be watching for it!!!

Hello everyone! It's my first posting here.....

Hello! My name is Jennifer and this is my first post as a member of the card DT here at Create it Green! I was over the top thrilled when Deanne let me know that I was allowed to come play in the proverbial sandbox with y'all. I had already decided that I wanted to do more recycling, re-purposing, & re-using of things in regards to my crafting. So what an ideal opportunity! Thank you, Deanne, and I hope I don't disappoint.

I have several cards that I would like to show you, so let's get on with the show! :)

My first card uses a coffee sleeve that I had saved from a trip to my local coffee house. I never know when inspiration is going to hit and in what way, but in this case, I decided to punch leaves. I also save the drawstring twine from the huge 20# dog food bags we buy every week for our 2 labs. I use this twine to tie buttons, etc. on my projects. It is the perfect size, as you can see here.

The second card uses some saved packing material. As soon as the package arrived in the mail, I knew I had to save this wonderful stuff! It was even pre-crinkled for me! how cool is THAT??!?!? I think I was more excited about the packing than whatever came in the box, as I don't even remember what was inside....... grins! anyhow, I snipped off a few bits, tied them up with this cute turquoise baker's twine, added a button, and it made the cutest little embellie! it has received quite a few comments already and spurred people to try this out themselves! now that is what recycling is all about, kiddos! wink wink wink!

My final project goes to show you that just because you repurpose something, it does not have to look plain or all 'naturey'. I am really fond of the vintage/shabby look. that is probably what most people would say would be my true style of crafting if given the choice to go crazy. On this card I used a tea tag that I had saved. I love saving these little babies! if I don't use the tags, then the twine is great because it is already tea stained! perfect for vintage crafting!!! I also love to use vintage buttons. this is another wonderful example of re-purposing something that might not otherwise be used.

Hi Everyone & a happy new year to you all! If the weather is cold & snowy where you are, I hope you are keeping safe & warm.

I was inspired by Jan's post below to re-use Christmas cards on my layouts.

To mat the photo on this layout I used a Christmas card I received this year, it's actually the inside of the card! The transparency at the bottom was also from another card.

Here I've used a card again for the title & I also used the reverse of the back of the card for my journalling space, I just stamped a label design and used my own handwritting.

Don't forget you can also re-use your Christmas gift tags, packaging & wrapping paper for your crafting!

Coffee Lid, Cup and Wrap Recycling

Cyndi wondered if anyone had an idea to recycle coffee cup lids so I put on my thinking cap and used part of the coffee cup, the lid and the wrap to make this card. I stamped "Thanks A Latte" on the wrap! These would also make cute invites for tea or coffee!

Wedding Invitations!

First of all HAPPY NEW YEAR (a couple days late)!!!!! I am super excited to be a design team member for Create It-GREEN and I look forward to sharing this new decade with all of you out there.

I was working on a layout with pictures from my friend, Roxy's wedding and pulled out the invitation she had sent. Of course I forgot to take a picture of it before I so lovingly ripped it apart... I promise to remember next time :)

She made the invitations herself so I took off some of the embellishments she created to add flair to my own layout. I took the red box (I matted it on the black) with love written in multiple languages, the two red flowers and brads, and the bride and groom that I put on the O of LOVE. The ribbon is from one of my Christmas gifts this year!

So next time you get a wedding invitation (or any invitation really) make sure to hold on to it... you might be able to add some of it to your own layout!

Recycle for Winter Decor--- Make a Snowman!

Before I put all my Christmas decorations away, I had to make another gift!

So here is a cute little vignette snowman made from a Laughing-Cow round cheese box! It also utilizes a baked egg souffle cup from Panera Bread as the base, used dryer sheets for snow on top of the base and batting scraps from a quilting project. Hope my friend, Kathryn -likes it!

Floral Fun: Altered Clipboard

Scraps gain new life: Ali's cheery altered clipboard!

Just wanted to show you a fun clipboard that I altered WITH SCRAPS!!!

* First, I sanded the clipboard with 150 grit sandpaper to make sure that the papers adhered well.

* I used larger scraps of paper for the background which I simply Mod-Podged in place. They came from my scrap bin!

* Then, while those were still wet, I overlaid them with scraps of floral patterned paper, having cut out a selection of various flowers from my scrap bin beforehand.

* I also raided my flower bin and added a few prima flowers, for interest. There were many different styles of flower but they made a cheerful montage on the clipboard!

* Once the background was dry, I mod-podged over the flowers. Allowed that to dry.

* I podged the whole surface of the clipboard once or twice more with drying time in between to seal everything well.

IMPORTANT: As you create your decorated clipboard, be sure the altered surface is flat so that when you have paper on your clipboard, you can write properly with no "bumps!" I always simply place 2-3 sheets of paper under my main sheet to be extra sure the surface I'm writing on is as smooth as possible. Computer misprints (we ALL have those!) or scrap paper works fine as a "buffer" if you need one!

*At the top right of my clipboard, I gave new life to an epoxy-centered flower that had been salvaged from another project. I added a pink flower to accent it.

*I tied some fun and fuzzy coloured yarn thru the metal loop of my clipboard and Voila! A pretty clipboard to display near my desk!!

This month, my Mom-in-law sent Pete and I a gorgeous Christmas card. When I opened it, I noticed a beautiful image on the back of the envelope! I couldn't bear to throw that part of it into the recycler, so I cut it out. Here it is:

If you get packages like I do, you have enough cardboard Priority Mail Boxes around to house a small army! In an attempt to reuse some of that old packaging, I decided to make these cute embellishments from them! After cutting them, I ran them through my crimper to give the corrugated look, painted, and held all layers together with a brad. A great embellie for any scrap page, card, or altered item!! Thanks for looking!!

Save those OLD JEANS!

At my place, old jeans are fun and handy!
We save them all, big and little, all colours and sizes!

Here are some ideas for "greening" those old jeans:
1. Cut a patch from an old pair of jeans and make a repair... thus extending the life of your nine year-old's favourite and still-wearable denims!

GREEN TIP: If you save many different colours of denim jeans, they can be extra handy as patches -- you can match the patch to the jeans needing it!

2. Make-believe: Create a pair of pretend suspenders for the dress-up bin! (LOL)

3. Embellish a layout! Stitch strips of denim to your layout's edge- thus creating a GREAT border for kid layouts!

4. Ease the journaling job! Use a pocket from the back of the old jeans on a LO to make it "interactive." It can hold a "secret" note or pull-out journaling, even a "library card!!"

5. Cut a triangle of denim and embellish with scraps. Then apply to a Kraft gift bag... an instant bohemian-style bag!!

6. Stitch a pocket! Make tough little utensil pockets for camping or hiking. My daughter took hers on a trip to Toronto with a group of youth, and found it handy in the hotel room kitchenette and when they went on sightseeing tours- no sandwiches for that girl! She brought salad with her for lunch! LOL

TIP: Remember that a utensil pocket w/ utensils inside cannot go in your carry-on luggage if you are flying. Put it in your suitcase! :)

ReUse those Containers!!!

I love stamping and I have several sets from a very well known stamp company :) Well, some of the individual ones come in those clear boxes, and to me it doesn't make sense to store that container for one stamp! So, I decided to repurpose them! Here I decorated one of those containers with bright papers, ribbon, some cut outs and a stamped tag, filled with small wrapped chocolates and took it to the hostess of a cookout we attedned. It was well received, recycled, and put to good use! (Stamped Sentiment: Papertrey Ink Mixed Messages Set) Thanks for stopping by!!!

We recently put in new counter-tops annd I was amazed at all the samples they had available. I picked up a few I liked and because I reuse and recycle, I kept them! Here's a key chain that can be made quickly! I used Crafty Secrets Cuts for an image but you could use any image. (Are you thinking Old greeting cards. cute images in Magazines or a photo?
I didn't put a protective coating on mine but I suppose they could be laminated or layered with Glossy Accents to protect the surface. I went to Hobby Lobby and picked up a package of rings...a BUNCH in a package for $3.99!

Turn Craft Packaging into a Gift!

Hello everyone. Just wanted to share a project I made using by reusing craft packaging. You know those simple packages Chipboard Cuts, Ribbon, Brads, and more come in? Why not turn them into a gift?! Here I have added some great designer paper, chipboard element decor, ribbon, letter stickers, and candy to make a super simple, but super cute gift! To make your own, first wash packaging well and let dry. Then, simply measure the inside of the packaging and cut your DP to size. Add candy, place paper on the back, and use tape to help secure the back. Add your ribbon, embellishments, and a gift tag if desired and WAH LAH! Done! Thanks for looking!

Milk Weed Pod Christmas Ornament

When I was a kid, my grandmother lived in the Catskill Mountains in New York. She was such a early recycler, never throwing away anything. She would say...Waste not, Want not!!! That was in the 1970's and she lived her entire life with that mantra. She was 96 when she passed last October, 2008 and I started looking for all the Christmas ornaments that we made with her. Here is a Milk Weed Pod that has been transformed! The outside or back was left natural. The inside, what you see, was coated with glitter and trim. The angel rests on a small tuft of fiber-fil! God Bless you Grandma... you are my recycling angel! ENJOY!

Rustic Woodland Reindeer

Look forward to sharing Eco Friendly projects and ideas with everyone.

Thought I would like to share with you, a fun little project that is not only Eco friendly, but very easy and a fun seasonal decoration for the whole family to create together.
It also makes for a healthy family walk together in the woods.

Supplies needed are some twigs or sticks, a pair of nippers and hot glue.

1.Cut 4 sticks to an even size for the legs.

2. One stick slightly smaller for the body, try to break your stick at the joint so you will be left with a small nub for the tail.

3. for the neck and the head break of a piece of stick that has a branch off , at the top.
This will leave you with a nice head piece.

4. for the antlers it is much easier to use a small twig that has a Y already formed, building up your antlers with small nips of twigs as you go along.
Building your antlers all together before hot gluing to the head is the easiest way to go about this step.

5. Begin with the legs hot gluing to the body and continue to on to the neck & head than antlers.
If you find it uneven just give the legs a quick nip with the nippers.

There you have it...from nature to your home.
You can preserve these deer by adding a coat of sealer...or add to the mulch pile or kindling for the fire place when it is time to take down the Holiday decorations.

Thanksgiving recycling

Gingerbread Men Party Decorations

Gingerbread Men made out of corrugated cardboard creates wonderful party decorations. Use large shipping boxes to cut out these oversize treats. A wide white paint pen provides the frosting look. Just go over the lines with liquid school glue that dries clear and iridescent glitter to make the design complete. Lastly...lean them in a snow cloud of fiberfill! We're ready to party!

I'm looking for 9 members to be on a design team (3 card, 3 layout and 3 altered projects). I will be posting a monthly card and layout sketch and would like to have some inspiring GREEN projects to post with the sketches. As well, I'd like to have 3 altered projects to post monthly.(When I say GREEN, I mean a recycled, repurposed or reused item)

If you'd like to apply...

~create a GREEN layout or card using one of these sketches and email to me and tell me the GREEN material/s you used in your creation. If you are applying for the altered project, simply make a new project for the call and let me know what GREEN item/s you used.

Altered CD Gift Card Envelope

After seeing Deanne's CD ornaments, I remembered that I decorated a CD envelope for a friends birthday. I had burned a disk and used an old CD mailer to create the protective shell. It's a great project to use up scraps and I good way to show off my own CyndiLou "Clipart"! I just glued everything together with Royal Coat and then added freehand doodles. Look for the "Cupcake Girl" CyndiLou Clipart in my photo album in the Creat it Green Yahoo Group area.

Handmade charms

I am traveling to Chapel Hill, NC to take my daughter to a softball hitting clinic but wanted to leave you with another idea before I prepare to leave.

These are handmade charms for on cards or scrapbook pages. I made them with soda can die cut pieces, soda caps, vintage photos printed off my computer and extra scraps.

Vintage recycled card

This is a card that I made using soda can embellishments that I made plus recycled costume jewelry.

The Christmas trees are made using a soda can. The metal from the can was run through the Cuttlebug and then painted with several colors of Generation Green Colorant. Then it was cut out using a cuttlebug die cut.

The gold piece of metal under the prima flower is from a bag of old jewelry that I picked up at an antique store. I used crate paper to make the bow. The vintage post card and tag are from Cavallini paper & co.

I hope that you enjoy this and that it will inspire you to "create it green."

I was helping a friend put together a Halloween Costume at a thrift store when I spotted this cool purse! It was only $2.00! It's great since I am having a handbag fetish lately! I was inspired when my friend told me that Girl Scout Cookies are being sold early this year, so I couldn't resist turning this Babe Bag into something Theme-riffic! Then, I just had to have a cookie! Not bad for a bar coaster, broken up toothpicks, paint and hot glue! Click on the pic and see a larger view!

Here are a few sketches and GREEN layouts I've created.

I flipped the sketch for my LO.

AT GLASSY BEACH

On my LO I used some REAL pieces of glass that was found at Glassy Beach. The patterned paper I used is also made from recycled paper.It's Jillibean Soup.

SNAIL SNAIL COME OUT OF YOUR SHELL!

On this layout I used a piece of paper found in a small photo album (blue piece behind photo). I used up some of my old letters and stripped the fronts off them and re-painted them in the color I wanted.

FUZZY FACE I LOVE YOU I used the cardboard packaging from some MM stickers.As well, I used some old letters that I had here and stripped off the front of them and repainted them to suit my LO.
